Get the size right
the first time
Size is the decision people most often get wrong — and the one that matters most. Below are the sizes we actually make, what each one is for, and how to check before you order.
The two-minute check
Before you order anything, do this. It takes less time than reading the rest of this page.
- Mark the rug outline on the floor with masking tape, newspaper or a bedsheet at the exact size you are considering.
- Put the furniture back where it lives. Now look at where the tape falls relative to the sofa or bed legs.
- Walk the room. If you step off the rug in the middle of a natural path, go one size up.
- Photograph it from the doorway. A photo shows proportion errors your eye forgives in person.
The single most common mistake
Buying too small. A rug that floats in front of the sofa makes the room look smaller than a bare floor would. When you are between two sizes, mark both outlines on the floor and choose the one that connects the furniture without crowding the walking path.

Floor rugs carry three standard sizes chosen for shape and purpose. Wall and spiritual rugs carry two carefully proportioned sizes, while mirror rugs use one full-length format. Every design also offers a custom size.

Leave 30–45 cm of bare floor between the rug and the wall. Wall-to-wall reads as carpet, not as a rug.

Dining room
One rule governs everything here: the rug must extend at least 60 cm past the table edge on every side, so a chair stays on the rug when it is pulled out.

Choose a shorter, denser pile for dining. Chair legs and long pile do not mix.
Entryway & balcony
- Entryway: 2×3 ft or 3×5 ft. Check the door clears the pile before you commit.
- Hallway: a 2.5×6 ft runner, leaving 10–15 cm of floor on each side.
- Balcony or terrace: 4×6 ft rectangle or a 4 ft round. Bring it indoors in monsoon or heavy weather — wool holds damp, and damp against a latex backing shortens its life.
Round sizing
Round rugs read smaller than a rectangle of similar area, so size up rather than down.

Organic & abstract sizing
For a freeform rug, the stated size is the overall space it occupies from its widest point to its tallest point. This lets you mark the design’s footprint on the floor before ordering. A 3×5 ft organic rug is listed and priced as 15 sq ft, while its curved outline may feel visually lighter than a rectangle of the same dimensions.
- 3×5 ft: bedside, vanity, or a layering piece on a larger base rug.
- 4×6 ft: a sculptural centrepiece for a lounge corner.
- 5×7 ft: large enough to anchor a seating group on its own, though it works best layered.
Radial flowers and rosettes
Petal-edged designs that read as circular are sized by diameter, measured across their widest petal points. A 4 ft diameter works as an accent; 5 ft is the more versatile statement size.
Wall rug sizing
Size a wall rug to the furniture below it, not to the wall.

For arches and freeform silhouettes, the listed width and height describe the overall wall space the piece occupies. We preserve the original proportions when scaling. Aim for the piece to be roughly two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it.
Spiritual living pieces
- 2×3 ft: the standard wall-panel scale, suited to a quiet corner, console or compact shrine wall.
- 2.5×4 ft: a larger feature-wall scale with stronger presence.
- Custom: proportioned to the exact wall while preserving the design's organic or arched silhouette.

Hand-made rugs carry a tolerance of roughly ±2% on each dimension. A 5×8 ft rug may measure a couple of centimetres over or under. This is normal for anything worked on a frame by hand.
